Dead Horse Ranch State Park Lagoons

Dead Horse Ranch State Park features three peaceful lagoons totaling around 16 surface acres, nestled along the Verde River. These calm waters, surrounded by cottonwood and mesquite trees, offer a serene setting for paddling, fishing, and wildlife watching.

What Makes Dead Horse Ranch State Park Lagoons Special

  • The lagoons are stocked with channel catfish in summer and rainbow trout in winter.

  • Naturally reproducing populations of largemouth bass and bluegill add to the fishing variety.

  • Scenic trail loops circle each lagoon, making it great for walking, birdwatching, and nature photography.

  • Frequent visits by wildlife, including nesting bald eagles and waterfowl, make it a birding hotspot.

Stay Hydrated & Protected

Bring water, sunscreen, and bug repellent - lagoon trails have both shaded and open areas where sun and bugs can be an issue.

Arrive early

Parking fills up fast on weekends and peak birding season, so reaching early ensures easy access.

Follow Fishing Rules

If you plan to fish, follow regulations and bring an Arizona fishing license (required for ages 10+).

Keep the Park Clean

Pack out all trash and use designated canoe/kayak launch ramps to avoid damaging fragile shoreline vegetation.
